About the Movies
“Jungle Fever” and “Clockers” are notable because these films were the first major movie roles for stars Halle Berry and Mekhi Phifer. Halle Berry’s very first movie role was as the crack addicted Vivian in “Jungle Fever.” This was quite an interesting start for an actress who would become famous for her beauty and glamour. Eleven years after her first role in “Jungle Fever”, Halle Berry won the Best Actress Academy Award.
Mekhi Phifer’s very first movie role was in the Spike Lee film “Clockers.” During an open cast call, Phifer won the role of the character Spike in this crime/mystery drama. After “Clockers,” Phifer went on to become celebrated for his role in the movie “A Lesson Before Dying” (A Top 100 Black Classic Movie) and as a regular on the TV Show “ER.” Mekhi Phifer has won two NAACP Image Awards for his role as Dr. Gregory Pratt on the TV drama ER.
“Do the Right Thing” is one of Spike Lee’s most critically-acclaimed films. This movie’s funny, yet serious depiction of racial tension in a Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood on a hot summer day is considered a classic. In fact, “Do the Right Thing” is one of the few African-American films to be selected for the Library of Congress National Film Registry. In 1990, right after making “Do the Right Thing”, Spike Lee made “Mo’ Better Blues.”. Denzel Washington stars in “Mo’ Better Blues” as jazz trumpeter Bleek Gilliam. Lee made this movie as a tribute to the jazz trumpet music that he grew up hearing his father, Bill Lee, play at home. Spike Lee’s father, Bill Lee, also composed the music for the “Mo’ Better Blues” movie soundtrack. Twelve years after starring in “Mo Better Blues,” Denzel Washington won the coveted Best Actor Academy Award.
The family involvement in Spike Lee’s filmmaking continued with his 1994 movie “Crooklyn.” “Crooklyn” is a semi-autobiographical film about what it was like for Spike Lee and his siblings to grow up in Brooklyn, New York during the 1970s. Spike Lee’s sister, Joie Lee, and brother, Cinque Lee, helped to write “Crooklyn.”
